Middle distance race

Wednesday, 8 August 2007

The middle distance race went really well for the Aussies, although a little differently from perhaps we expected.  Alex made a costly mistake on the very difficult first check point (you can see the maps on the middle link above) and then a few small errors through the course.  As with all WOCs the field was very tightly bunched and any mistake pushes you down the results list as quickly as you made it.

Thor rode solidly not making any navigational errors, but choosing a few slower routes.  She finished in 36th - a very good result for a first WOC.  Tony made a couple of mistakes to come in 61st, 5 places behind Dave Wood.  Woodsie has been doing exceptionally well in the difficult terrain, given that this was his 7th MBO race.

Dave S and Paul D were the speedsters for the day.  Dave made on error of about 1 minute or so and apart from that rode pretty cleanly.  Paul made no navigational errors and only one route choice error which cost about 1 minute.  Three check points from the end, Paul's pedal snapped off and he had to ride the last part of the course with one leg and run to the finish.  But despite losing 3 or 4 places as a result he still managed 18th place.  Dave S was less than 1 minute behind him in 25th place.
